I am deep into developing my new product, STORY THERAPY - CHARACTER AND CHARACTER DYNAMICS.
HOW THE WOUND, CHOICE, AND ACTION REVEAL CHARACTER
The childhood wound is a source of influence for the character's choices and actions in stories. While it may not be visible on screen or page, this inner conflict drives all their decisions to shape who they are as an individual starting from early life experiences.
Why do some people take risks while others play it safe? This mindset stems from the childhood wound. This single event becomes so defining when things trigger it, it causes the character to re-experience the earlier trauma. This impacts choice and action in the present. For example, if you are writing a scene where your protagonist is considering whether or not to take a new job, you could use this opportunity to reveal some key aspects of their character. Are they someone who takes risks? Are they more cautious? Does this connect to an earlier wound? What is their biggest fear? What is their dream? When we have a glimpse of the earlier wound, it gives us insight into why they make the choices they make.
Action also reveals character. Let's say, for example, that your protagonist is walking down the street and sees a homeless person asking for change. What do they do? Do they stop to help, or do they walk away?
The choices and actions made by the central character from the earlier wound give us an inner glimpse while connecting us to why we care about the story.
